AI search visibility
AI Search Visibility: Measure the Answers That Shape the Shortlist
AI search visibility is the degree to which your brand, products and pages appear inside AI-generated answers. For a commercial team the useful version is narrower: when a buyer asks AI what to choose, do you make the shortlist?
Visibility is more than being named
A system worth trusting can tell the difference between six situations that need six different responses.
Traditional search visibility is expressed through rankings, impressions, clicks and share of search. AI search does not always return a ranked list — it may produce a synthesised explanation, a shortlist, a comparison, a direct recommendation, or an answer grounded in cited sources. So it needs a different measurement model. At minimum, track:
- Presence — was the brand named?
- Recommendation — was it actually put forward?
- Citation — was your site, or another relevant source, used?
- Competitor occupancy — who appeared instead?
- Engine coverage — which systems agree, and which disagree?
- Question importance — was this a buying decision or a definition?
- Change over time — did the measured state improve, decline or shift?
Mention≠Recommendation
Imagine an answer that says: “Platform A is the best fit for agencies. Platform B is also available but is more limited for this use case.” Both brands are mentioned. One is recommended. A score that credits them equally has hidden the buyer outcome — which is the only part of that sentence with revenue attached to it.
Visibility is question-, engine- and time-specific
A brand is not simply “visible in AI”. It is visible for a question, in an engine, under a measurement context, at a point in time.
One brand, one question, three engines, one run
Illustrative example“Which [category] platform is best for a mid-size retailer?”
That context includes prompt wording, location, language, which model answered, whether web search or grounding was used, the date, and how many times the question was repeated. Which is why a serious programme preserves the measurement protocol rather than saving a monthly score. Without the protocol you cannot tell later whether a number moved because the market moved or because your own measurement did.
Not every question is worth the same, either. Compare “what is project management software?” with “what are the best project management tools for a 30-person marketing agency?”. The second sits next to a purchase. Buyer-question intent is classified so commercial losses do not get buried under a pile of informational prompts — purchase and vendor selection, comparison and alternatives, solution evaluation, category research.
The six-layer stack
Layers 3 and 4 are where most tools stop being useful.
| Layer | The question it answers | What it must not do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Measured reality | What did the engines actually say? Store the answer evidence. | Discard the raw answer and keep only a score. |
| 2. Commercial gap | Which important buyer questions are you losing? | Weight a definition question like a shortlist question. |
| 3. Diagnosis | What patterns are observable in the answers that won? | Present observed themes as hidden ranking factors. |
| 4. Actionability | Can this gap reasonably be influenced? | Assume every gap is fixable, or hide the ones that are not. |
| 5. Next action | What should be investigated or changed first? | Emit “improve authority” with nothing attached to it. |
| 6. Remeasurement | Under a compatible protocol, what changed? | Compare two runs that are not actually comparable. |
Inference, not measurement
Diagnosis produces associations: pricing and value evidence, use-case fit, independent proof, comparison content, a specific capability, a recurring cited source. Those are observed patterns in answers that won — not secret ranking factors, and describing them as such is the single most common overclaim in this category.
Calculating visibility without lying to yourself
There is no industry-standard visibility score, so the only real test is whether the number can be taken apart.
Different tools blend mention rate, recommendation rate, list position, citation rate, share of voice, sentiment and prompt weighting in different proportions. Composite scores are useful for scanning a trend; they are dangerous when they become the decision. The test is whether you can answer “what raw observations created this number?” If not, the score cannot be audited — by you or by a client asking a fair question.
Recommendation share
Across repeated compatible observations of the same question, how often was the brand actually recommended?
Strongest competitor share
How often did the leading competitor win the same question? A 0% brand rate means something very different when nobody is recommended than when one rival wins every run.
Citation coverage
How often did the answer include sources relevant to your brand or category?
Provider breadth
Is the result isolated to one engine, or consistent across several?
Confidence
How much compatible evidence supports the conclusion? Confidence must dampen certainty — it can never make a weak result look stronger.
Positioning coverage
If your product is built around a differentiator, does each engine understand it and recommend you for it?
A positioning gap is more useful than a low score
In our founder-owned validation of OwnQR, 14 buyer questions across three engines produced 84 observations. A generic visibility score would have hidden the actual finding.
| Stated positioning claim | OpenAI | Gemini | Perplexity | Measured state |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lifetime access | Recommended | Lost to Uniqode | Lost to Uniqode | Positioning contested |
| No monthly subscription | Recommended | Lost to Uniqode | Lost to Uniqode | Positioning contested |
| One-time payment | Recommended | Lost to Uniqode | Lost to Uniqode | Positioning contested |
| Editable destination after printing | Lost | Lost | Lost | Positioning lost on every measured engine |
The core positioning is understood by one engine and not consistently by the other two, and the claim the brand says it is built on is being won by a competitor everywhere.
That is a finding a founder can act on. “AI visibility: 42” is not.
How this differs from Google Search visibility
Keep doing SEO. Cross-engine AI visibility is a wider problem than Google, and rank tracking cannot observe it.
Google's own guidance states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
But ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity use different retrieval, cite different sources, choose different competitors and vary between runs. Answer measurement is an addition to SEO rather than a replacement for it.
How to improve AI search visibility
Do not begin with hacks. Begin with the measured gap — the right action depends entirely on which one you have.
- If winning answers emphasise a capability you genuinely have — make sure a relevant page you own communicates it clearly and accurately.
- If the capability is unknown — verify the product fact before changing marketing copy.
- If the capability is false — do not invent it. Decide whether to compete on another criterion.
- If third-party sources dominate — check whether they are relevant and realistically addressable. Frequency does not prove access.
- If you are cited but not recommended — the problem is likely positioning or comparative evidence, not discoverability.
- If one engine wins and another loses — treat them separately instead of averaging the disagreement away.
Source relevance≠Source addressability
A source can appear in every winning answer and still offer no legitimate route for your brand to participate. Frequency is evidence of relevance, never evidence of access.
What visibility measurement cannot prove
Measurement can show what was said, who was recommended, which sources appeared, which themes were present and how the state changed. It cannot do the rest.
Outside what observational measurement supports
- the engine's hidden ranking logic,
- that a citation caused a recommendation,
- that a page edit caused a later result,
- or that one sample represents every buyer.
A system worth paying for keeps those boundaries visible rather than selling past them.
Start with 10–20 buyer questions
You do not need a 100,000-prompt dataset to start.
Build a high-value set around category selection, use-case fit, alternatives, comparisons, pricing and value, and your strategic differentiators. Approve it. Measure it repeatedly. Then improve the evidence around the gaps that actually matter — and turn the results into a trend with AI search monitoring.
Common questions
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how a brand appears in AI-generated answers for relevant questions: whether it is mentioned, recommended or cited, which competitors appear instead, and how that changes over time. It is a property of a question on an engine at a point in time, not a single site-wide number.
How is AI search visibility measured?
By sending a frozen set of buyer questions to each engine repeatedly and recording, per run, whether the brand was named, cited or recommended, which competitors appeared, which sources the answer used, and whether the call succeeded at all. The measurement context is stored alongside the result.
Is AI search visibility a ranking?
Not in the traditional sense. Some answers contain an ordered list, but many are synthesised narratives with no positions at all. Measure the answer outcome rather than forcing every response into a rank.
Is AI search visibility part of SEO?
For Google’s AI features, Google says SEO best practices remain relevant because a page still has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search. Across the wider AI ecosystem, answer measurement is an additional layer that complements SEO rather than replacing it.
Can I improve visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity?
Often, but there is no universal hack. What helps depends on the measured gap: clearer evidence on a relevant page, a missing comparison or use-case asset, accurate entity and product information, credible third-party sources, or a decision not to compete on that criterion at all.

How we measure, and how this page is sourced
What we actually measure
Every result comes from the official OpenAI, Google Gemini
and Perplexity APIs with web search or grounding enabled. In our data those
surfaces are recorded as openai_api_web_search,
gemini_api_google_search and perplexity_api_sonar, and reports name
them explicitly.
That is not the same thing as a logged-in person using the ChatGPT app. These are official interfaces with web search on, but they are measurement surfaces rather than consumer sessions: no personalisation, no memory, no app-only features. Results can differ from what any individual user sees, and we do not claim the two are identical. We would rather put that on the pricing page than in the small print.
How this page is sourced
- Vendor pricing and features come from each vendor's own public pricing page, with the date we checked it. We do not copy figures out of other people's comparison posts.
- Google-specific claims come from Google Search Central, not from SEO commentary about Google.
- Research claims name the paper and separate what was demonstrated in a benchmark from what holds in the open web.
- First-hand numbers come from our own measurement runs. Where the brand measured is founder-owned, the page says so in the same sentence as the finding.
This page is maintained by the person who built the measurement engine. There is no editorial team and no external reviewer behind it, and we are not going to invent one for a byline. How the measurements are collected.
